Music I’ve Been Listening To (Chapter 1)

Sometime in January, outside of work, my boss shared with me an Apple Music playlist he had titled “GRISELDA”, which contained various songs and albums by the individual members of the rap group Griselda. It wasn’t until February after I heard their song “DR. BIRDS” from their collective album – W.W.C.D. (released in 2019), that I started really looking into them.

A little background on Griselda

Griselda is a rap collective based out of Buffalo, New York. The primary members consist of founder Westside Gunn, his brother Conway the Machine and their cousin Benny the Butcher. Westside Gunn started Griselda Records in 2012 after being released from prison in 2011, and named after “Griselda by Fashion Rebels,” a fashion label he started in 2005, which is also named after the Coke Queen of Colombia, Griselda Blanco.

In the early days of Griselda’s existence in the rap world, Westside backed his brother Conway, however; Gunn had to take the reins after Conway was shot in the back of the head and neck, leaving him with Bell’s Palsy. After a few years of Westside carrying the weight of Griselda on his shoulders, Conway eventually returned in 2015, working alongside his brother, releasing solo albums, and shortly after this their cousin Benny hopped on.

What they’re doing now

The captain of the SS Shmlorgenborg 9, Captain Jimothy John Jilliams, told his crew to set sail onward to Sector 9. There had been rumors of a legendary crystal being there that they could make a decent bit of coin from selling. There was no know name for this crystal, not because the writer couldn’t think of a name, but because this crystal is just that legendary and mysterious. So Captain Jilliams, or “Captain Jilly” as the crew called him, took his crew to venture down onto Sector 9 to find this crystal.

They descended through the gooey cloudiness that made up most of Sector 9’s upper-atmosphere, and landed in a desolate, grassy field. Nothing in sight. No one in sight. According to the rumors, the legendary crystal was supposedly located in a desert, in close proximity to an oasis that should be located in the center of the entire dessert. Captain Jilly didn’t want to use up too much of the ship’s fuel flying around the planet to find the desert, so he decided to look for the desert on foot with his crew. Starting from the ship, each member of the crew would walk into a certain direction until the found the desert, and whoever found it would go back to the ship and fire a flare to alert the others to return as well.
